The Department of the Navy (DON) is transitioning to the Windows 7 (WIN 7) Operating System. In addition, Microsoft support for Windows XP is scheduled to end on 8 April 2014, and support for Windows NT has ended. As a result, application owners must comply with the following:
Shore based applications must be compatible with WIN 7 by 18 January 2013.
Tactical applications must be compatible with WIN 7 by 30 September 2013.
In accordance with reference (a), the DON must eliminate use of Windows NT. By 30 January 2013, a plan to eliminate use of Windows NT must be submitted to the DON Deputy Chief Information Officer (CIO) (Navy) or DON Deputy Chief Information Officer (CIO) (Marine Corps).
Application owners who are unable to meet these dates must submit a waiver request to the DON Deputy CIO (Navy) or the DON Deputy CIO (Marine Corps) for decision. Approved waivers will be forwarded to the DON Chief Information Officer (CIO) within 30 days for review and retention.
The DON Deputy CIO (Navy) must provide a transition plan by 18 January 2013 for Afloat applications that are not currently compatible with WIN 7 to the DON CIO for decision on approval.
Applications not compatible with WIN 7 that have not been granted a waiver by the appropriate DON Deputy CIO will not be allowed to continue operating on DoD/DON networks beyond the deadlines stated above.
Follow-on guidance will be published to ensure that all DON applications and networks are WIN 7 compliant and that funding for Windows XP and Windows NT efforts do not continue beyond FY14.
The DON CIO point of contact on this issue is Mr. Ron Keating, 703-695-1953, ronald.keating@navy.mil.
